This is our second year of GYO in the planters we brought for the front garden. This year really has not been as good as last year, which was a real disappointment. Shall we see where it all went wrong.
Trough style planters really need some thinking about and planning, far better than how I planted them this year. This is a little annoying as I thought I had already learnt this lesson last year but it looks like I had not.
I planted Swiss Card next to Fennel and the Swiss chard took over and the poor fennel had not light and did very badly. To make matters worse we did not really eat the Swiss chard. Which meant wasted food and space. This was pure bad planning and planting.
The courgettes did OK but not very well, last summer we had them none stop for weeks. This time they did not grow properly or went mouldy at the bottom. I am not really sure why this happened. They were planted in the same position as last time but a different variety.
The carrots and the beetroot and peas all got eaten by voles. This is the one pea that made it
The runner beans did not take off at all and when they did they got eaten.
One success was sweetcorn, this did really well and the boys, well one of the boys and I feasted on it. The onions were brilliant we did not buy any for a couple of weeks. I harvested all the ones we planted.
We had quite a few tomatoes but for some reason they were not as sweet, these were the same variety as last year.
What else lead to the pretty rubbish grow your own season, a lot if it was down to time and care. I did not give is as much time as I did last year. From being busy at school to thinking about the border in the main garden we were re doing, the veggies got put in and kind of left.
This means that next year I need think about what we eat planting less but getting more to eat and give them space to grow. Trying to give them more time as well.
